It’s been over a decade since Icelandic experimentalists múm last graced us with a full-length, but the wait is finally over. Today, the collective announced History of Silence, their seventh studio album, due September 19th on Morr Music. For a band that has always excelled at crafting intricate sonic tapestries, the promise of a new body of work—”recorded, deconstructed, put back together again, refined and finished over the course of two years”—is an intriguing prospect.
Alongside the announcement, múm shared the video for their new single, “Mild at Heart.” The track is a quintessential múm offering: fluid and ethereal, punctuated by those signature moments of hushed introspection. It’s an “open-armed introduction” to an album described as moving “like weather: unexpected, intimate, quietly detailed.” Watch the accompanying video below.
History of Silence seems poised to be a return to form for múm, a vibrant, if subtly rendered, collection of songs that challenges conventional notions of time and space in music. After a recent showcase at Big Ears Festival, the band is also gearing up for a North American tour.
