Modern Nature are set to release their new full-length, The Heat Warps, on August 29th via Bella Union. Accompanying the announcement is the release of “Pharaoh,” a track that immediately distinguishes itself as a potent, motorik throb, hinting at a sharpened focus from a band increasingly unafraid to push their own boundaries.
“Pharaoh” arrives with a Michael Stasiak-directed video (watch below), providing a visual counterpoint to the track’s insistent pulse. Frontman Jack Cooper describes the song as a meditation on influence – “as much about Pharoah Sanders as it is about the kings and politicians we’re meant to believe in.” It’s a statement of purpose, a call to forge a personal philosophy amidst the despondency of modern life, directly echoing the late Andrew Weatherall’s mantra, “Fail we may, sail we must.” Weatherall, a fan of Modern Nature himself, inspired Cooper to craft a record he might spin late into the night.
He delivers. Pharaoh is also our Song of the Day.
The Heat Warps signifies a deliberate evolution for Modern Nature. Following the free-form exploration of 2023’s No Fixed Point In Space, Cooper and core members Jim Wallis (drums) and Jeff Tobias (bass) found themselves gravitating towards more structured grooves on tour. This new direction is solidified by the addition of guitarist Tara Cunningham, whose symbiotic partnership with Cooper creates a powerful, dual-guitar dynamic. Cooper highlights the influence of Television’s early Brian Eno demos, aiming for a unified approach that colours the rhythm section.
Written after Cooper’s period of “hibernation” in the countryside, The Heat Warps is a reawakening, exploring themes of collectivism and humanity’s relationship with the natural world with newfound directness. Despite wrestling with the grim realities of 2025, the album offers solace and optimism, culminating in the transcendent closer “Totality,” inspired by the communal awe of a solar eclipse.
