Acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter James Yorkston has announced his new album, Songs for Nina & Johanna, set for release on August 22 via Domino. The record, his sixteenth for the label, sees him once again collaborating with members of Stockholm’s The Second Hand Orchestra. This time, he’s joined by two of Sweden’s most iconic voices: Nina Persson of The Cardigans and Johanna Söderberg of First Aid Kit.
Following his critically lauded 2023 album The Great White Sea Eagle, which featured Persson, this new LP sees Persson and Söderberg sharing vocal duties with Yorkston. Persson appears on five tracks and Söderberg on four. “Who wouldn’t embrace the chance to sing with two great Swedish voices?” Yorkston says of the collaboration. “They complement, yet never compete. And me? I tried not to get in their way.”
Two new tracks, the gentle and poignant “A Moment Longer” and “Love / Luck,” are available to stream now and are accompanied by videos (watch below). The album, recorded live at Studio Rymden in Stockholm, is described as a meditation on family, love, and parenthood. The sessions found Söderberg heavily pregnant, a circumstance that the album press suggests may have “ignited a certain emotion” in her performances.
The album features contributions from Peter Morén (Peter Bjorn and John), Ullis Gyllenberg, Lina Langendorf, and Lars Skoglund. It will be available in various formats, including a limited Dinked LP with a bonus CD of reimagined tracks.
