The Western Massachusetts-forged trio Editrix are back, announcing their third full-length, The Big E, out July 25 in their debut for Joyful Noise Recordings. Arriving with the news is the album’s title track and opener, a skittering, frantic piece of avant-rock that reaffirms the band’s knack for controlled chaos.
“The Big E” is a maelstrom of galloping fretwork from guitarist/vocalist Wendy Eisenberg, anchored by the stuttering, intricate interplay of bassist Steve Cameron and drummer Josh Daniel. Named for its foundational, recurring E chords, the track operates with a jittery precision. Lyrically, Eisenberg explores the alienating feeling of ageing within music scenes, comparing it to an extraterrestrial encounter. “This song is about alien visitors—hoping they’re friendly and curious like the best of us humans,” Eisenberg explains. “It’s also about ageing, which feels like you’re an alien to certain generations, including your younger selves, and the impossibility of being understood.”

The follow-up to 2022’s Editrix II: Editrix Goes To Hell, the new record was born from a geographically scattered process. With Eisenberg and Cameron now based in New York City and Daniel holding down their Massachusetts fort, the band embraced a more focused, “microdosing” approach to songwriting. They traded remote writing for precious, hyper-productive in-person sessions where entire songs would materialise in one go.
Recorded live over four days with the legendary tech-death producer Colin Marston (Krallice, Behold… The Arctopus), The Big E captures this spontaneity while feeling more groove-oriented than its predecessors. Though Eisenberg confesses to not always knowing the exact polyrhythms at play, the result is a crunchy, meditative, and impressively baffling leap forward, inching Editrix ever closer to the centre of the avant-rock constellation.
