Duo Ruut, the Estonian duo celebrated for their innovative use of the 42-string Estonian zither, also known as a kannel, release their second full-length album, “Ilmateade” (The Weather Report) today. Written over four years of touring, this album transcends its playful title to explore the profound and often overlooked connection between weather and human experience.
With almost every track touching upon meteorological themes, some overtly, others through more profound metaphors, Ilmateade is an impressive and immersive journey that also draws upon traditional Estonian texts. As with their debut, Duo Ruut once again seamlessly blends folklore with contemporary songwriting, crafting a sound that feels both ancient and remarkably fresh.
From the chilling embrace of Udu (Fog), depicting a treacherous cold morning, to the rhythmic push and pull of Vastlalaul (Sledging Song) featuring Puuluup, each track unfolds like a weather event. Kuuse koht (The Spruce) beautifully masks a tale of grief and growth, while Hobuse mäng (Horse Game) delves into ancient truths about fate.
The album’s midpoint, an Interlude with Erki Pärnoja, offers a moment of reflective calm, the journey continuing with Pulmadeks (For the Wedding), a tender ode to unspoken love, and the golden hues of Suvi rannas (Summer at the Beach). As dusk falls, Enne ööd (Nightfall) with EiK guides listeners home with quiet joy. Despite the title, even Vilud ilmad (Gloomy Days) offers comfort, pointing to the resilience that can be found in others.
The album concludes with Saja, lase (Rain, pour), a soft and tranquil ending followed by a floaty, ethereal Outro that marks the journey’s completion. Throughout Ilmateade, the listener is invited to feel the influence of the weather on our own emotions, lives, and culture, something Duo Ruut seem able to express with ease and grace.
