Followers of Cory Hanson‘s dual artistic paths – both as a solo artist and as a member of Wand – will find themselves on familiar ground with his latest offering. His new single, Bird on a Swing, taken from his new album I Love People (July 25th, Drag City), features the same tight-knit ensemble responsible for last year’s Vertigo: Robbie Cody on co-production duties, Evan Backer anchoring the low end and arranging strings and horns, Evan Burrows holding down the rhythm section, and Cory himself handling piano, guitars, vocals, and songwriting.
However, this new material signals a notable shift, as I Love People steps back for a more impartial, almost sepia-toned gaze at everyday existence. Penned over several years, these new songs are described as weaving a ’70s singer-songwriter sensibility into a continuous loop, drawing further influence from the timeless, everyman melodies of the American Songbook.
The accompanying black-and-white, bottle-glass music video for “Bird on a Swing” reflects Hanson’s newly refined aesthetic.
