Scottish-Indian artist Chloe Matharu, celebrated for her unique blend of folk music and maritime experiences, has released her poignant new single and video, “A Sailor’s Prayer“. This deeply personal track features her Punjabi Grandfather’s harmonium that was used for worship in the Gurdwara, Sikh Temple, adding a spiritual resonance to the piece.
“A Sailor’s Prayer” serves as a heartfelt tribute to seafarers lost to the perils of the ocean, highlighting the tragic history of maritime disasters and the loss of life caused by overloaded vessels to deliberate scuttling and wartime destruction. Matharu, a former Navigational Officer in the Merchant Navy, brings an authentic voice to the often-unseen struggles of modern seafarers, continuing the folk tradition of narrating working life through song.
As the sun rays in the morning
Reach my face as we’re sailing
I will pray as we pass over
The sailors grave
