LA singer/songwriter Christian Lee Hutson has announced the release of ‘Paradise Pop. 10 Deluxe‘ (June 6th via ANTI). The album features five reimagined tracks from last year’s album and a previous fan favourite, “Rubberneckers”. He says, “I’ve never done a deluxe for an album but there were a few songs that I wanted to try to document in a more stripped-down fashion, more like how I’ve been doing them on tour.”
Featuring just Hutson on acoustic guitar and Odessa Jorgensen on cello and violin, the change, as can be heard on his new single, After Hours, is quite dramatic. The original track had a cosmic shimmer, emphasised by Shahzad Ismaily’s synths and Nick Levine’s pedal steel, which gave a different mood to the song. Here, the dialling down of the arrangements provides more than just a quieter acoustic shift. This new setting provides a deeper intimacy, emphasising the introspection of Hutson’s lyrics in which the narrator looks down from a condominium in a corporatised Heaven to the woman he misses back on earth; the feeling of isolation is intensified, alongside the narrator’s detachment from the daily grind and the sense of longing heightened:
I live by myself in a duplex for now
With a pretty good view of the pyramids
At night I take the train home, sinking to new lows
And picture you practicing pirouettes
