In February, Nashville-based guitarist/composer William Tyler announced his new album Time Indefinite (April 25th via Psychic Hotline). The announcement was accompanied by a generous three tracks, that together, formed a suite of sorts: “Cabin Six,” “Concern,” and “Star of Hope.”
Today, he follows-up with “Anima Hotel”, a supple love song taking inspiration from Carl Yung, highlighting the spiritual and philosophical approach on Time Indefinite.
In Tyler’s words, “Carl Jung used the term anima to refer to the unconscious divine feminine within the man. So often in romantic love we are seeking both the magical other and if anything, the mirror to align with the different parts of our psyche that we project. I imagine this as kind of like a love song I wrote to different people, all of us having to stay at one of those middle-of-nowhere airport motels awaiting a flight to be rescheduled.”
Anima Hotel is one of most tender and moving pieces I’ve heard William Tyler perform. Framed in the knowledge that time indefinite is, in his own words, “a mental illness record,” this just feels so open and honest, I can see myself revisiting this album a lot.
