Matthew Young‘s new album, Undercurrents (May 30th, 2025 via Drag City), features recordings made intermittently since the late 1970s and skews from the nearly algorithmic computer music of side one to the moving pastoral folk of the second.
It’s from the second side that ‘The Summer Girls‘, his second album single is taken, showcasing his love for the hammered dulcimer. The piece is a setting of a poem by Matthew’s aunt, Marion Lineaweaver and his beautiful chiming patterns lay the groundwork for a touching, yearning vocal performance, with his fragile, honest voice stirring deep, powerful nostalgia while reflecting on summers past.
