Scottish smallpipes player Brìghde Chaimbeul recently announced her third album, ‘Sunwise’ (out June 27th on tak:til/ Glitterbeat), a highly anticipated follow-up to Carry Them with Us which featured Canadian saxophonist Colin Stetson and made it into our Top 100 Albums of 2023 and Thomas Blake’s Top 10 Albums of 2023.
Her lead single Bog an Lochan continued her fearless, experimental ethos, pushing the boundaries and expectations of both experimental and traditional sonics, which also extends to her latest single ‘She Went Astray‘ which opens to foghorn like calls on the pipes before we hear her vocals.
Chaimbeul says about the track: “This is an old vocal dance song I found from Miss Peigi MacRae of North Glendale (South Uist Island). It dates from 1934. This song is all about the rhythm of the language. In this track I wanted to embrace the slightly disorientating feeling that comes with two or three things happening at once!”
The release of “Bog an Lochan” coincides with her first US tour and an appearance at the influential Big Ears festival in Knoxville, Tennessee (USA). Brìghde Chaimbeul has also announced UK festival dates in August and an 8-date UK tour in September (see below).
The track will also feature in our next Mixtape which drops later today.
