RE:VULVA are a new folk band featuring Janice Burns (Janice Burns & Jon Doran) on mandolin, Holly Clarke (Holly and the Reivers) on vocals and guitar, Cathy Geldard on fiddle and Amy Thatcher (Kathryn Tickell, The Shee) on synth and drum pad. They’re on a mission to reclaim the best classic folk tunes and refashion these and their own compositions with a squirt of millennial pop nostalgia. They find that groove straight off the mark with Girls and Their Toys.
Composed by Amy, their first singe, Girls and Their Toys, is out now on streaming platforms (find it on Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal – released March 14th) and is also available on Bandcamp. The accompanying video, which you can watch below, is a celebration of womanhood, queerness, and freedom of expression.
They told us:
The title challenges the idea that for some reason, when swapping genders in the classic phrase ‘boys and their toys’ it’s perceived as risqué rather than innocent, silly and fun. It also aims to highlight that women are often overlooked as instrumentalists in music scenes across all genres. This catchy reel written by Amy Thatcher cocoons bold, traditional fiddle, mandolin and guitar playing in sparkly synth and dance beats, inspired by millennial club favourites.
The single is accompanied by a colourful 90s-inspired video by Sel Maclean which you can watch below.
The music video focuses heavily on 90s aesthetics, including the quintessential fisheye lens and high saturated colours, with homages to some classic 90s music videos and films. Filmed at Cobalt Studios CiC in Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley, it’s a celebration of womanhood, queerness, and freedom of expression. The video culminates with an ecstatic, uninhibited, disco-lit club scene.
They have a number of upcoming live dates (details below) including Manchester Folk Festival this month (March 22nd) and Queer Folk Club at London’s Cecil Sharp House on June 7th.
