Last month, we shared the news that Alex Rex – the current vehicle of songwriter/drummer/folk-rock renaissance man Alex Neilson, will release a new album on March 28th via The Barne Society. The National Trust (pre-order here) will be the final Alex Rex studio album, a project Neilson began in 2017 with Vermillion.
For this finale, he is joined by longtime collaborators Lavinia Blackwall, Marco Rea, and Rory Haye return, alongside guest musicians like Jill O’Sullivan (Jill Lorean) and Trembling Bells guitarist Mike Hastings.
The results are described as a profoundly personal and multifaceted work, blending acid wit with haunting introspection. The latest album single, My Old Self Again, is accompanied by a video, which we have the pleasure of sharing ahead of its release tomorrow (March 12th).
Neilson shared:
“This is a drunk country ditty that was hatched during lockdown. It takes in some of my favourite things of the self-isolation era; Caribbean author Jean Rhys, The Danish nation and the gritty fly-on-the-wall documentary Fake Taxi.”
Featuring Jack Tattie, the video was Filmed by Meara Sharma and Edited by Stephen Spence.
Alex Rex is also touring with Lavinia Blackwall in April (see dates below).
