Last month, guitarist and archivist Cameron Knowler announced his second full-length album, CRK, which is set for release on April 4th via Worried Songs. That announcement was led with his lead single, Felicity, and accompanied by a video shot on Super 8 film by Steven Perlin. Today he is sharing his latest single, Secret Water on which he’s joined by Rayna Gellert on fiddle, Ethan Jodziewicz on bass and Jordan Tice (of Hawktail) on mandolin. The album also features contributions from Jay Bellerose, Harrison Whitford, Dylan Day, Mark Goldenberg, Rich Hinman and Robert Bowlin.
The track is one of many on CRK shaped by the diverse cast of collaborators Knowler called in for his follow-up to the entirely solo Places of Consequence. “I got to work with some of my good friends and all time favorite musicians—many times simultaneously—on breaking ground in the effort of reclaiming my hometown of Yuma, Arizona,” Knowler explains. “These songs paint a picture of my relationship to that place, my isolated childhood there, and how it all crumbled after my dad was suddenly incarcerated in 2008. Those early impressions fuel my work in spite of their once-stifling darkness; the backdrop, a theatrical bordertown, always moves on with characteristic resourcefulness. Everything in that town is small, bare and historically charged which is a fitting analog to the artforms I’m most attracted to: instrumental songs, polaroids, short fiction and personal narrative. Those are all represented in this project.”
