‘Last Night’ is the latest single from Yoshika Colwell, released today on Blue Flowers. The track features Rachel Horton-Kitchlew on harp and Joe Harvey-Whyte on pedal steel. Described as intuitive and mystical, Yoshika Colwell shared:
“I wrote this song in about half an hour sitting alone in my caravan thinking about a dream I’d had the night before. Moments of this kind of fluidity are so rare but it kind of just flowed out of me. The truth of my subconscious mind rose to the surface, through all the mental mess & clutter and out through the song. It was one of the first songs I’d written for a long time that went towards what I was scared to articulate instead of obscuring it with metaphor or abstract, image based lyrics.”
The accompanying video by Tilly Wace accentuates its abstract feel. Also, her minimalist and uncluttered framing is beautiful; she has a great photographic eye, a clarity of vision that reflects Colwell rising above the mental mess & clutter she talks of. This is all the more impressive, considering it’s Wace’s first music video.
Colwell plays her biggest headline show to date at The Moth Club, London on 8th April (more dates below).
