Japanese musician, songwriter and inner / outer world traveller Satomi Magae aka Satomimagae has announced the release of their new album, Taba, on Brooklyn-based label RVNG Intl.
The lyrics on her last full-length, 2021’s Hanazon, was compared to photographs in their ‘deft capturing of nature and human gesture’, a theme that extends to Taba, a Japanese term for a bunch, bundle or grouping together of different things, the album is assembled as a loose collection of short stories–a series of vignettes that document both the personal and the universal, seen and unseen. Observing and absorbing the fleeting scenes and sounds of life flowing outside of her home studio.
“I was thinking about how we see people as a group and individuals within a group,” Satomi says. “How groups are connected and also how borders exist. The awareness that we are just one element in the collective (taba) and yet each individual’s invisible experiences and memories remain somewhere, influencing us, or society, without realizing it. We are small dots within a mass.”
The lead single, Many, is accompanied by a video from the ON-EI [音映] creative collective. “This video is a slideshow. We hope that it will help viewers to think of the scenery inside their heart, as well as the scenery they have yet to see.”
Satomimagae’s Taba will be released on vinyl, Japanese import CD (via Plancha), and digital editions on April 25, 2025.
