Hailing from the Scottish Highlands, Northumberland and Shetland, Alt-folk trio Salt House, featuring Ewan MacPherson (Vocals, Guitars), new member Anna Hughes (Vocals, Guitar, Fiddle, Viola, Harmonium) and Jenny Sturgeon (Vocals, Keys, Guitar), are hitting the road next month ahead of the release of their new album due for release later this year.
Anna Hughes joined the band following the departure of Lauren MacColl last year who will be kept busy with other new projects. Anna is a super-talented in-demand multi-instrumentalist and composer, and will no doubt bring something new to their sound. Her own music is inspired by landscapes and the wonders of the natural world, something which is close to the heart of Salt House so she’ll certainly fit in well; well you can see and hear for yourself in the video below.
Their last album, Riverwoods, was a KLOF Mag Album of the Month and featured entirely new material. It was described by Glenn Kimpton as an album of stirringly gorgeous music that fully delivers its message about the importance of nature, its inherent beauty in our world, and how we need to maintain it. He added that Riverwoods was a “perfectly honed piece of art that elegantly plays to its performers’ strengths. It weaves a set of songs that are spare in structure and spacious enough to allow each note, confidently and precisely played, to resonate with the listener. It’s an exceptional record.”
In his review of their previous album, Huam, Thomas Blake noted how their music “rewards deep listening just as a landscape rewards deep observation,” adding how “it delights in the spirit of the outdoors and the warmth of home. Light and quick, profound and full of care, it is an album of serenely balanced opposites.”
Those of you that are lucky enough to catch them on this tour will get to experience new material before anyone else, so don’t hang about, their tickets tend to go fast, and several dates are already sold out. Here’s a new video (featuring Anna) of the trio performing an acoustic version of Headed Our Way that was filmed by Rupert Shanks.
While we’ve no details as yet, Ewan wasn’t giving anything away when I spoke to him earlier today, Salt House & The Furrow Collective (Lucy Farrell, Rachel Newton, Emily Portman and Alasdair Roberts) have an exciting new collaboration project on the way. Watch them perfomring Mountain of Gold from their 2020 album Huam.
