Following his highly-praised 2022 self-titled album, Chicago-based guitarist Eli Winter announces his eagerly awaited follow-up, A Trick of the Light. Due for release on 2nd May 2025 via Three Lobed Recordings, watch the accompanying video for his first album single, Cracking the Jaw.
“The closest thing I have to a pop song. It’s quite dark in comparison to my past work—a car about to crash. I began playing it on solo tours, and its focus tightened as I rehearsed and performed it with Tyler Damon, Sam Wagster and Andrew Scott Young. Almost everything you hear comes from the lucky thirteenth take. On some level I hope it sets the title to music.”
As with his last album, there are no shortage of collaborators including David Grubbs, Mike Watt, Kiran Leonard (on a left-handed cittern, no less), among others. The album is described as a testament to his restless curiosity and omnivorous musical sensibilities. In his own words, it’s a record that has “nothing to do with genre or idiom or homage or pastiche. It has everything to do with learning what the music wants, how it feels, and trusting when it wants something or doesn’t want it.”
The video was Directed by Josiah Lydon and Ian Resnick
