Taken from his new album End of the Middle – due Feb 14th (Weird World / Domino) – Rich(ard) Dawson shares the third song from his new album. Gondola is sung from the point of view of a grandma reflecting on her life – past, present and future. The beautifully shot video, directed by CLUMP Collective, features Jenny Coverack, miming Dawson’s lyrics that open, “Goodmorning Britain, a soft-boiled egg…”
Coverack’s acting throughout brings Dawson’s lyrics into sharp focus; there’s a kind of ‘matter of fact’ warmth as she sings of the moment – pains down her legs, struggles to pay her energy bills, her trip to Lidl on the bus to get another bottle of Blossom Hill and deeper reflections – regrets of going to work for her dad in a jewellery shop instead of pursuing higher education. In a number of scenes, the trailing microphone lead is like an umbilical cord between the protagonist and the never-seen Dawson. The whole thing is quite moving; a portrait so vivid, it’s totally genius.
