In October, Bridget Hayden announced her new album Cold Blows the Rain, out on January 10, 2025 via Basin Rock. Joined by her ghostly titled band, The Apparitions (Sam Mcloughlin and Dan Bridgewood-Hill), the album marks a change from her usually more experimental work, instead she turns her attention to reinterpreting traditional folk songs.
Our introduction to the album was via the traditional ballad, Lovely on the Water, described as wrapped in mist and drizzle, the crawling drone of low, heavy clouds on flat-top moors, the sound of the dark Calder Valley floor and sun-starved hills in West Yorkshire in the North of England.
Today, we are treated to her new single ‘She Moved Through The Fayre‘. She maintains the melancholic yet peaceful atmosphere of her lead single, “The weather speaks the most eloquently about human loss,” Bridget says. “It’s good to feel enveloped by something so much vaster than ourselves. The rain and the tears all become one.”
The accompanying video features footage taken from The University of Sheffield Library Digital Collections with clips from Abingdon Fair and Goose Fair, both from 1970-1979.
