This week’s Monday Morning Brew, which is also the last one of 2024, is an ambient and fairly mellow affair and features a few releases from Hubro (the Norwegian jazz and improvised music label). The playlist is bookended with a few new releases, opening with Chris Brain’s new single ‘Sun Did Glide’, the second single from his third album, ‘New Light’, due for release in spring 2025. New Light was recorded across two contrasting settings – the intimacy of Chris’ allotment shed in the quiet, early hours of the morning and the resonant atmosphere of The Nave Studios in Leeds – the single encapsulates a sense of balance between solitude and collaboration.
Towards the end, you can hear a track from Tamsin Elliott’s new EP Music for Hospitals (volume i). The four-track EP is a collection of harp pieces and has just been released, offering a moment for calm and contemplation during what can be a frantic time of year.
The music was written for patients while Tamsin was working as a Musician in Resident at Bristol & Weston hospitals. The works are also a reflection of the things she missed during her own lengthy stays in hospital.
Tamsin says of the EP, “My goal with this music is to offer a bit of calm to people’s days. Writing and playing these pieces has brought me a lot of peace, and I hope they do the same for you”.
Also featured is a cover track from Peter Broderick’s new Mimi EP – a two-track release.
“I was asked by my family to play violin at my grandmother Mimi’s memorial service. I wrote this piece for the beloved matriarch of our family. To my great surprise, when cousin John Doran heard it at the memorial, he was inspired to write an organ accompaniment. Meanwhile, another great Mimi passed away around the same time — the angel voice Mimi Parker of the band Low. I learned their song ‘Laser Beam’, and my sister Heather Woods Broderick was kind enough to sing harmony. With these two songs I bow in tribute to the great lost Mimis of this world.” — Peter Broderick.
Happy New Year folks.
