Since Belfast-based folk singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside announced his new album, “Teeth of Time”, out February 28th via Nettwerk, he’s been treating us to a series of new singles and videos including his double A-Side single Marching Round The Ladies / The Good Life, and Ghost of the Bloomfield Road / Good For One Thing.
His latest, Up and Down, is a long-awaited fan favourite from Josh’s live shows and a key single from the upcoming album.
This track reflects on the intransient nature of life and death itself. The old maxim that the reaper quotes to the cradle death comes to mind – “You got the same as everyone else. a lifetime”. The weight of his inevitable passing and the nature of the passing itself sees Joshua bear his anxieties for all to see. The motif of Joshua as a rotting corpse is present for the first time in this track and features frequently throughout the album – but instead of fearing his demise, it’s presented as a welcome break from the fears and trials that come with loving something more than yourself.
