Richard Dawson recently announced his new album End of the Middle, described as “Everything is held back and soft“. Due for release on Valentine’s Day (14th February 2025), he led the way with Polytunnel and a music video that was filmed at several allotments. Today, in a timely fashion, he shares Boxing Day Sales, accompanied by another great video Directed by James Hankins.
I wanted to make a small, pure, jaded ‘pop!’ song that would somehow resemble an unwanted Xmas pressie: A pair of novelty socks, some Lynx Africa, or a daft plastic puzzle you find in your stocking then chuck in a drawer for the next 10 years. I hope, despite there not being much room in the verses for the central character to say what’s been troubling them, that somehow their bright spirit might melt away the brown-grey slush, and their voice be heard.
Featuring the clarinet of Faye MacCalman (who plays the role of “lightning” throughout the album), Boxing Day Sales is also his hugely unorthodox bid for Christmas Number 1.
Alongside his 2025 Tour in April, he has also announced a series of instore dates around the albums release in February 2025 (see below).
