Our Song of the Day comes from Canadian singer-songwriter Devarrow with his new single Likewise. The single is released today and marks the beginning of a series of singles leading up to his forthcoming album, Heart Shaped Rock, via Paper Bag Records. They say that once a song is written, it can take on a life of its own and decide its own fate. This may well be the case for Likewise, a song born way back in 2019 during an artist residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts; it has gone through a series of iterations to punch its way into the present with an utterly transforming lift.
According to the press, the song’s initial compelling outro made such a dramatic impact on Devarrow that he reworked it into the song’s catchy chorus, creating a bouncy, foot-tapping anthem. If you ever wanted proof that a song should never be rushed, then look no further. Devarrow clearly knows a thing or two about melodic brevity, as Likewise is a song you want to lose yourself in. It has summer written all over it.
We have the pleasure of premiering the accompanying video, directed by Riley Lamarche and featuring actor Gavin Cameron. Like the tune, the video’s sombre feel counters the unequivocal joy and energy of the song, highlighting that brilliant melodic tension. They nailed it so well.

Of the album, Devarrow said, “This record is largely influenced by consciously trying to focus on the things that bring joy to our lives. The world feels scary, and I wanted to inspire people to see the things that are good, and the areas we do have control, in a world where we feel so powerless. We have control in the ways we treat people, build community, the relationship we have with our environment, and how we treat our mental and physical health. This record is about being excited about finding the strength to take control of one’s health, and discovering some ways to stay happy and healthy.”
‘Likewise’ is available now across all streaming platforms from June 19th, whilst Devarrow’s fourth studio album ‘Heart Shaped Rock’ will be released in October this year.
