Following their 2018 release Plainly Mistaken, double-bassist Casey Toll (Jake Xerxes Fussell, Mt. Moriah) and drummer Rex McMurry (CAVE) team up once again with Nathan Bowles on their new album, Are Possible, on Drag City Records on July 26th.
Following their first album single, The Ternions, they return today with Our Air, accompanied by a video shot by Evan Morgan in Augusta, GA, between May 17 and 19, 2024.
Our Air almost glides into view, conveying a natural flow and calm steadiness that makes an unexpected twist work so well, making it an easy choice for Song of the Day. Casey Toll opens proceedings on a bluesy groove before McMurray’s drums add some bite before we hear Bowles’ plaintive banjo. They seem in no rush, and along with some punctuated accents from the banjo, they drift along. Then, just before the mid-way mark, they hit us…the banjo stops, and cymbal taps and bass reset the scene for a jazzy flute played by Skylar Gudasz. This adds a bucolic almost 70s jazz feel to proceedings, conjuring a lazy summer afternoon. Like a subtle refraction of light, it reframes Our Air, a mercurial shift that’s beautifully crafted and visceral.
