Following his widely acclaimed Batov Records debut Reclusive Rituals (2021), Shay Hazan has just released his second solo album on Batov, titled ‘Wusul وصول’. The album’s title, Arabic for ‘arrival’, is in celebration of his firstborn child. His new album, while still influenced by late 60s free jazz, Afrobeat and Gnawa music from Morocco, draws on broader influences and involves members of Hazan’s live band, creating a distinctive synergy that can be heard across what is a very danceable album.
That larger and more intricate musical fabric can be heard on the likes of “A Walk In Dir El-Assad”, in which he brings to life the celebratory night sounds of weddings in the small Arabic village of El-Assad. It features “live drums from Shahar Haziza, and Hazan’s earthy guimbri-led basslines and gritty guitar, Eyal Netzer and tenor sax and Roy Zuzovsky trade solos and harmonise over the melody.”
