Avant-pop French duo Sages Comme Des Sauvages (Wise Go Wild), who draw on folk, world music, post-punk, French chanson and electronic influences, have shared the accompanying video for their new single ‘Le Loyer’ (13th March) or The Rent, from their forthcoming new album ‘Maison Maquis‘ due for release this May through Capitane Records and Rising Bird Music.
In a world where the wealthiest population (1.1%) owns 45.8% of the global wealth, they are not afraid to highlight who pays the price: “This song tackles a big issue, that of guarantees, deposits, agencies and contracts. The number of square metres, the height under the ceiling, the tension on the stone. To have it or not, that is the question. From which window do we look out on the world? What happens to the wallpaper when the building collapses? The stars show off their Hollywood villas, and in the movies, people always have a big flat. However, the famous flat screen we watch them on is almost bigger than the living room. The richest people build bunkers and orchestrate the end of the world. Key boxes and second homes suck the life out of villages. Tourists replace neighbours and suitcases on wheels make a hellish noise. This is what we try to observe in a ballad that is as melancholic as it is vindictive. Who pays for what they did? Who pays for what they should? Who pays for their sleep? Who pays to forget?”
Le Loyer follows on from their recent single ‘Répare ou Pas‘ (translated as ‘Repair It or Not’), filmed at a demolition derby. The video was directed by Nicolas Adalbert (watch it below), and there are some incredible aerial shots that capture the high-adrenalin charge of the moment. The band add: “There, these fans revive cars that no one wants anymore to give them one last lap, one final roll before their definitive journey to the scrapyard. And the dust raised by these battered sheets and by those who give them a last rescue becomes like a magical and haunting ritual, animated by the beauty of this question: Do we repair it or not?”
‘Maison Maquis” is released 17th May via Capitane Records and Rising Bird Music.
