The last release we featured from London-based singer-songwriter Ned Roberts was From The Reels 2012-2020, in which Billy Rough opens, “he may be based in London, but his spirit thrives in the Laurel Canyon.” He concludes, “Effortlessly evocative the album reinforces Roberts as a true rising star. I, for one, will be following his career with much anticipation. Beautiful.”
The good news is that Ned Roberts will release his fourth studio album, Heavy Summer, on 15th May 2024. To mark the announcement, he releases his lead single today, Another Record Round, which is accompanied by a nostalgic video that was Directed, filmed, and edited by Florence Roberts. That warm Laurel Canyon vibe is still there in abundance – dreamy and soulful, melancholy balanced by a hint of psychedelic sparkle. It’s another beautifully crafted single.
Ned says: “The lyrics to this song were written very instinctively, verse after verse, as kind of catharsis. I think it captures a moment of crisis, a crossroads, but listening now, I hear the hope in it too. It came alive in the studio, and this was an early take when we were reacting intuitively to the song.”
For Heavy Summer, Ned Roberts teams up again with producer Luther Russell and sound engineer Jason Hiller. The record was cut and mixed in 6 days in the late LA summer heat. Recorded mostly live to a vintage 8-track tape machine, Luther (keys, mellotron, guitars, drums) and Jason (bass) doubled as an expert band. Heavy Summer showcases both sides of Ned’s creative output, with gorgeously constructed band takes recorded during the heat of the day and intimate acoustic numbers recorded just as night drew in.
