For Timneyore, the lead single from ODD OKODDO‘s forthcoming second album Negore (Altin Village & Mine), the Kenyan/German duo featuring Olith Ratego and Sven Kacirek called upon Chicago-based composer, clarinettist and vocalist Angel Bat Dawid to add her magic touch.
An uncompromising voice, Dawid’s debut ‘Oracle’ drew on a mass of influences, a solid musical highlight of 2019 that led to her being widely praised for her original and openhearted approach to music. On Timneyore, that same musical response can be heard through Dawid’s understated bass clarinet, which rises in prominence to Ratego’s more urgent vocals towards the song’s end. Her clarinet playing feels intuitively entwined with Ratego’s vocals, and there’s an undeniable beauty to that interaction – Dawid believes music is inherently spiritual, and you can hear it in action here.
Timeyore is also our Song of the Day.
Negore draws on the dodo music of the Luo people, enriched with percussive, melodic, and occasionally electronic means.
