Featuring Courtney Werner and Evan Morgan, the North Carolina-based duo Magic Tuber Stringband recently announced their signing to Thrill Jockey and the release of their new album, Needlefall, a journey of composition and improvisation that’s been shaped by nature and brought to life by a host of ‘fellow travelers’. The album is scheduled for release on March 22nd. Their album announcement was accompanied by their bittersweet lead single, “Days of Longing”, followed today by “Twelfth House“; also our Tune of the Day.
They write that the track “was written during a period of solitude and interioirity in early 2022”. Talking about its composition, they add, “I wrote Twelfth House for fiddle…I tried to take a fingerstyle guitar composition approach for fiddle and write the primary part. For me that meant repeating phrases, rhythmic bowing across strings, double stops and chorded shapes.”
Some music seems to embody the very essence of nature. Like their fellow labelmates Sally Anne Morgan and Sarah Louise, they clearly spend time in nature…there’s an undulating flow and movement to Twelfth House that’s mesmerising and draws you back time and again.
“It’s wonderful to hear younger and newer players mixing and matching in their own ways, but still keeping those roots elements that speak to me the most.” Mike Gangloff talking to KLOF Mag about Magic Tuber Stringband.
