In 2020, Joshua Massad & Dylan Aycock released a beautiful self-titled cassette featuring four home-recorded improvisations. Aycock, also known as Dylan Golden Aycock, is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known as a six & twelve-string acoustic guitar player. He is also the founder of the highly regarded Scissor Tail Editions, which has a broad roster of artists that have featured on Folk Radio, including Gary Peters, Raoul Eden, Sarah Louise and more. Massad is an Indian classical musician living between Tulsa and India, studying tabla for many years under Zakir Hussain and sitar.
Their first self-titled release (you can hear a track on our KLOF No. 5 Mix here) was recorded in 2016 but wasn’t released until four years later. A similar time gap lies between the recording of ‘Two Improvisations’ and its release – also their first full-length vinyl LP.
Those of you familiar with the first release will expect virtuoso playing, you won’t be disappointed. Listen to Track one below.
Aycock: Track one is an improvisation recorded at the home of Joshua Massad’s friend who he was house sitting for and invited me to come play. When I showed up the door was open and he was deep in practice so no words were spoken. I set up a mic and just started playing. We played for 45 minutes straight and the 20 mins of the first track was culled from that moment. We clicked immediately and that was the first time we ever played together. Joshua is studying and teaching in India now where he’s been since 2019.
Two Improvisations releases April 5th 2024.
