Dieuf-Dieul ed Thies was formed in the city of Thiès in Senegal in 1979 before breaking up just four years later in 1983 before releasing any of the recordings they made during this period. Those early recordings wouldn’t see the light of day until 2013 when Teranga Beat released the first volume of Dieuf-Dieul’s music, followed by vol. 2 album in 2015, the same year in which the band reformed (featuring three original members and additional young musicians), embarking on their first 2 European tours in 2017.
The current line-up features Bass Sarr (Co-founder, Vocal, Maracas), Alassane Cisse (Bass guitar), Matar Dieng (Timpani, Cow Bell, Percussion), Pape M’ Baye (Conga, Sabar, Tamani, Percussion), Wilfried Zinsou (Trombone, Alto & Tenor Saxophone), Raymond Mendy (Guitar) and Magaye Gueye (Guitar).
Their new album, Dieuf-Dieul de Thies, will be released on 19th January via Buda Musique. Watch their accompanying music video for their album single Galo below that captures the essence of their innovative style and ability to seamlessly blend different genres. A European tour is planned for 2025.
