Mother Sky present their astonishing new single ‘Pull Me Under’, with an accompanying film by acclaimed cinematographer Richard Lonsdale.
Earlier this year, we were introduced to Mother Sky and their third single, ‘The Land Beneath‘. Featuring a collective of musicians heralding from South Wales, Manchester and London (including founding members Jon Thorne and Luke Flowers), they made a profound and immediate impression. As we mentioned then, the band had originally assembled remotely during the pandemic in 2021 to record a collection of obscure folk covers before reuniting to write and record original music.
…like someone rolled The Velvet Underground, Kate Bush and the Dirty Three into one. Gritty and transcendent, it’s totally mesmerising.

Their new single, Pull Me Under, is bittersweet and tender, something that Filmmaker/cinematographer Richard Lonsdale expertly taps into on his accompanying video featuring his daughter as the lonesome wanderer. The arrangements have a longing depth that magnetically draws you in; they put me in mind of Sandy Denny’s Fotheringay era – through a beautiful post-rock lens.
You can’t run from who you are.

A cascade of memories and flickering images, ‘Pull Me Under’ touches upon expectations merging with reality and what it costs to be true to oneself, gently drawing us deep into a whirlpool of bittersweet strings and pulsing upright bass.
Pull Me Under is accompanied by a B-side, a blistering performance of their post-rock epic ‘Bethesda’, recorded live at Chale Abbey on the Isle of Wight. If you love Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai and Godspeed, ‘Bethesda’ will delight you.
Building on previous highly praised singles, this is the dazzling sound of a band rapidly growing in confidence and stature after a stellar six months that has seen them amaze audiences from The Other Stage & BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury ’23.
Katie Rose from Mother Sky on their new single ‘Pull Me Under’:
“The song found its way into the world one early Sunday morning at a band writing session in Wales.
Introspective and maybe even sombre, ‘Pull Me Under’ tells a tale of isolation and troubled relationships, alluding to that slither of hope that takes you towards finding your way through the darkest of nights, making peace with what once was and tending to the future, with a renewed optimism.
Filmmaker/cinematographer Richard Lonsdale crafted his film to accompany the song, in which his daughter plays the character of the ‘lonesome wanderer’ finding her way through the woods to higher ground.”
Pull Me Under is also our Song of the Day.
