Most of the music (there are some exceptions) on this week’s Monday Morning Brew is taken from old recordings and features Olla Belle Reed. J.E. Mainer’s Mountaineers, Kitsos Harisiadis, Richard Williams, George Deligeorge, Washington Phillips, Joel and Odell Thompson, Henry Thomas, Etta Baker & Cora Phillips, Bookmiller Shannon and more.
It opens with Jabe Dillon (born in 1898), a champion fiddle player from Tylertown, Mississippi. The tune played here, Brown Skin Girl, later known as Refuse Love, was recorded in 1949 and features on the latest volume of The Secret Museum of Mankind on Jalopy Records. I actually first heard the tune being played by Jake Blount via a clip on Facebook. Blount said: “It originally comes from a Black Mississippi fiddler named Old Denis, but the only recordings of it are by Jabe Dillon, who learned it from Denis and called it Brown Skinned Girl. Still putting the pieces together, but what a groove!!”
Dedicated to all the vinyl collectors out there.
