Brooklyn guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Steve Gunn has announced a string of solo UK tour dates on which he will be joined by Brigid Mae Power ahead of further dates in Spain and Poland. Gunn’s last solo album was Other You, released in 2021, which Folk Radio’s Glenn Kimpton called his most elegant-sounding solo record yet.
Watch him in session, recorded live at Jackie Kannon’s Rat Fink Room in NYC.
Gunn followed with Nakama, an EP featuring reinterpretations of tracks from ‘Other You’, including close friends Mikey Coltun and Ahmoudou Madassane, Natural Information Society, as well as remixes by Circuit des Yeux and Bing & Ruth.
More recently, we were treated to Reflections Vol 1: Let the Moon be a Planet, a collaboration with fellow New Yorker David Moore, on which the duo explored each other’s improvisations. The album worked on many levels, leading Glenn Kimpton to conclude that its natural idiosyncrasies and fine nuances invite and reward deep listening—a quietly rich, contemplative and satisfying experience.
A further collaboration came from Gunn Truscinski Nace (Steve Gunn, John Truscinski and Bill Nace) with ‘Glass Band’, an unpretentiously experimental and adventurous album, with lots to discover and each player bringing plenty to the table. As Glenn Kimpton said in his review here, it rewards, perhaps even demands, repeated listens, which is certainly no hardship.
The tour dates will take in the Bert Jansch 80th Birthday Celebration, a tribute to one of the most influential figures in contemporary British folk. The show, which takes place at the Royal Festival Hall, includes appearances from Bernard Butler, Jacqui McShee, Robert Plant, Kathryn Williams, Brigid Mae Power & Steve Gunn, Martin Simpson, James Yorkston, Sam Lee and more (read more).
A Folk Radio favourite, Brigid Mae Power, will be joining Gunn on all of his UK dates. Her latest album, Dream From The Deep Well, was her most accessible to date. In his review, Thomas Blake concludes: Brigid Mae Power has created a piece of art that resonates timelessly on a mythic level. In spite of or perhaps because of this, it is also a highly personal piece of art, brimming with the joy and sadness that hides in plain sight, in the minutiae of everyday life.
What a great double headliner…and if you’re lucky enough to catch the Brighton date, you’ll also be treated to the music of Gwenifer Raymond, who burst onto the scene in 2018 with her debut album You Never Were Much of a Dancer via one of her favourite record labels (and one of ours) Tompkins Square.
On her debut, Glenn Kimpton noted how she used subtle repetition and drone playing while her cyclical techniques created a hypnotic quality that lulls the listener in before jolting them. Her 2020 follow-up, Strange Lights over Garth Mountain, saw her extending her pieces, allowing “space to breathe and Gwen time to flex and explore.”
