Catrin Finch and Aoife Ní Bhriain share their new single and accompanying video ‘Woven’ – taken from their forthcoming album ‘Double You’.
Double You is the first collaboration between leading Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and multi-award-winning traditional and classical violinist Aoife Ní Bhriain. It’s also one of our Featured Albums of the Month; you can read Glenn Kimpton’s review here, in which he concludes:
As we could reasonably expect, the music throughout Double You is beautiful, but it contains more than that. There is virtuosity present, of course, as we mentioned before, but this music is layered with emotion, appreciation for style and tradition and the freedom of just playing. The performances by both musicians are stellar, leaving you thinking that this partnership was inevitable and absolutely necessary. We can only hope that this essential release is the start of a fruitful musical relationship.
The album is out on 27 October 2023 (pre-order here), and today, they have shared their latest single and accompanying video for ‘Woven’, filmed by Apex Creative on location at Knight Gallery, Woolwich Work.
On ‘Woven’, they tell us:
‘The baroque composer Pietro Locatelli wrote a series of Capricci for violin, as part of his masterful suite of concerti known as L’arte del violino. These ‘Caprices’ can be extremely challenging to play. Aoife felt that her chosen Caprice had a trad feel, so she transferred it to the Hardanger violin, changing its sound world for the track Woven. Aoife: “In fairness, the Hardanger fiddle is closer to the Baroque violin, which is what they would have been playing at the time.” They’ve taken motifs from the Caprice and threaded them together to make something completely new.’
