Tomorrow sees the release of ‘Overleaf‘, the new album from Grace Smith Trio. They are acclaimed fiddle and viola player Grace Smith, Sam Partridge (Concertina, Electric Guitar) and Bevan Morris (Double Bass).
The trio are all well-known faces on the folk scene, with Grace spending the last ten years playing with the likes of the Monster Ceilidh Band, Katie Doherty and the Navigators and Cri du Canard, whilst Sam and Bevan are both members of Pons Aelius (amongst others!) and all three are experienced music educators.
To mark the release, we have the pleasure of sharing their music video for Saison / Overleaf, from which the album takes its name.
I fell for this tune on the first listen, so it was an immediate yes when we were asked if we’d like to premiere the video for it. While combining their choice of instruments may not be new to folk, this trio do so in a very original, daring and fresh-sounding way. It’s an exhilarating listen, and how they expertly and intuitively weave those sounds together provides a beautiful depth to their music. The whole thing, the music, the video, Elly Lucas’s photography for the album, it’s all so rich and vibrant. A must-buy. They are also on tour, so ensure you catch them live and give them your full support (dates and links below).
Grace told us:
We are so excited that Overleaf is out this week; this album has been a long time coming for the band, and it’s amazing to be sharing this music with everyone. We’ve had a dream team working on the album from start to finish, and I’m really proud of what we’ve made. I really hope you enjoy our brand new video for ‘Saison / Overleaf’ – this is where the title of the album came from, inspired by this time of change and turning a new page. I wrote both of these tunes, and we arranged them as a band.
The video itself was a lot of fun to make – possibly the most fun day at work ever?! We loved having the excuse for a silly afternoon of juggling and playing with ribbons – this amount of fun quite accurately represents how much we enjoy making music together and spending time with each other, alongside the focus and passion for the music we make. We really hope you enjoy the video and have a lot of fun watching it, and we really hope you enjoy listening to the rest of the album too! Thanks so much to Folk Radio for premiering the new video!
Video filmed and edited by Bevan Morris and Phoebe Haller at Ookpik Productions.
