This is a long overdue return for our more experimental-leaning KLOF mix series. Among those artists recently featured, we have new music from Dominique Fils-Aimé, taken from her new album ‘Our Roots Run Deep ‘(reviewed here) and described as offering a humanist side to healing where mind, soul and body connect to word, rhythm and imagery. It’s an album that dreams in lush colours, a stunning work of folk-magic and fellowship.” Don’t miss Gareth Thompson’s interview with Dominique here.
Also recently reviewed by Gareth is Chief Adjuah’s ‘Bark Out Thunder Roar Out Lightning‘:
These songs are charged with meanings that the initiated will get, while the rest of us can merely intuit. You sense Adjuah’s physical being is tuned and vibrating like an instrument. His visionary voice enters the realms of a mythic otherness. Rarely have sound and heritage been so forcefully joined as on this divine ruckus of an album.
We recently shared the news of Daniel Bachman’s new album When the Roses Come Again, out November 17th on Three Lobed Recordings, on which Daniel’ exits the steel string world where he started and tiptoes into a new one, where apparitions and nature inhabit compositions in a musical, genealogical garden.’
We also have new music from Alabaster DePlume’s new album, Come With Fierce Grace, a collection of tracks drawn from the same sessions as Alabaster’s much-lauded double LP GOLD. Rather than a collection of B-sides, it’s a continuation of the organic collaborative and improvisational process that he established… almost as if GOLD has grown a new limb or aged into a new phase.
Cyril Cyril & Meridian Brothers have collaborated on a new 7″ release – Arriving in Colombia, Swiss duo Cyril Cyril spent a day with Bogotá-based radicals and fellow sonic explorers Meridian Brothers. The result is explosive, somewhere between Brazilian tropicalism, Andean dizziness and the spontaneous colliding of Western & Eastern styles so dear to Cyril Cyril.
There is a track from synth waltzes and accordion laments, the new album from acclaimed Lebanese artist Yara Asmar. This eagerly anticipated album, a collection of intimate recordings, provides another glimpse into Yara’s world. The album showcases her ability to channel raw emotion into her music. Vulnerable, intimate and moving, these pieces were once again recorded at her home in Beirut using lo-fi recording processes. The sound palette here is richer than on her debut, with more focus on synth work and the warm drone of her grandmother’s Hohner Marchesa accordion.
We rewind the clocks for the bagpipes of Dafo Trendafilov (of Bulgaria) and a track from To Drive Away the Vampires: Balkan Folk Musics, 1930s-80s which can be found on Ian Nagoski’s superb Canary Records label, which I’ve been dipping into a lot of late.
There are three tracks taken from Old Heaven Books based in Shenzhen, China. They are a record label and bookstore and also host live in-store performances. All three tracks were recorded live at special events. You can find them on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/oldheavenbooks.
There’s also music from US street musician George “Bongo Joe” Coleman – Cyril Yeterian of the above-mentioned Cyril Cyril named his Geneva record store and label after George – Bongo Joe Records (whom we’ve reviewed a number of releases from).
There’s also music from The Heliocentrics, Joe Townsend, John Ondolo and Pep Laguarda & Tapineria.
Enjoy
