Folk In The Park have announced the return of their one-day festival to Sutton this summer. The festival was a huge hit last year with music fans in southwest London last year and this summer they are promising to make it bigger and better than ever.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 19th, once again in Manor Park, Sutton, with a vastly expanded capacity of more than 2,000 people. It will offer ten hours of live artists as well as a full bar with local beers and wines, locally-sourced, plant-based food, craft workshops and a family zone.
The line-up features globally admired names such as Nick Lowe, Del Amitri, Dana Gillespie and the London Blues Band, Geraint Watkins and the Mosquitoes and Iain Matthews; award-winning Americana favourites Danny and the Champions of the World and Hannah White; much-admired names on the roots scene Roseanne Reid, Matt Owens (formerly of platinum-selling UK act Noah and the Whale) and Lauren Housley and the Northern Cowboys; Tom & Chris from seminal Creation Records band the Jasmine Minks; and rising talents Hannah Scott, David Hope and Holly Henderson.
Folk In The Park is staged by Sutton’s award-winning grassroots music venue, vegan café and community hub, the Sound Lounge, whose co-founder Keiron Marshall says: “We had a fantastic time at last year’s FITP, culminating in an unforgettable closing set, as the sun went down, by the Magic Numbers. The feedback was incredible, so we just had to come back even bigger this year!”
Scottish band Del Amitri, whose worldwide album sales total six million, and Nick Lowe, loved and respected worldwide as one of Britain’s greatest songwriters, will both arrive at Folk In The Park fresh from extensive North American tours. “We’re absolutely delighted to be heading up Folk In The Park this summer,” say Del Amitri. “We had such a great time down in Sutton earlier this year to screen our live film at the Sound Lounge and this is our chance to do it for real! Thanks for the invite, we’ll see you on the 19th of August.”
Iain Matthews, co-founder of no fewer than three great names in folk music – Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort and Plainsong – adds: “Very much looking forward to playing Folk In The Park this year. It seems ages since I played a festival other than Cropredy, let alone solo. Haven’t seen Nick Lowe since the dinosaurs roamed these parts. In fact, the last time we shared a stage was in 1968, with Fairport, when I was…hmmm…younger.” Co-curator and Sound Lounge patron Paul Sexton adds: “It’s incredibly heartwarming to feel the love and support for Folk In The Park, not only from our audience – who will again be coming from all over the country and sometimes beyond – but also from world-class artists who will be with us in Sutton this August.”
