Ruth Theodore released her career-spanning compilation record Cherry Picker in April, from which we shared the first single and video, People People, a defiant but deeply humane account of a reunion between two friends who meet again whilst waiting in a queue at the local council office.
Today she is sharing a video for Thompson, another song that touches on human relationships. Filmed and edited by Kaleidoshoots, the accompanying video features some beautiful original choreography that dancers Jennifer Delve and Haitian-born French musician-songwriter Renes BBWI bring to life, conveying the complex sentiments of the song, and visually heightened by being filmed in black and white.
Ruth Theodore on Thompson:
“Thompson is a very intimate song about falling in love and falling asleep. Searching for answers in a sleeping lovers breath, inner thoughts teeter between the real world and a fever-esque dream world, eventually spiraling into a kind of emotional oblivion. The dozing lovers body feels close and intense, but as they slowly slip deeper & deeper into sleep,, the other left alone is falling deeper & deeper in love. Without a word being spoken, both end up in their impenetrable internal ethers….basically, it’s a love song with a glitch!!!!”
She later adds: It was beautifully filmed by Lucy from Kaleido Studios, in an old weavers’ cottage that was midway through being renovated. It features dancers Jennifer Delve and Renes BBWI both really good friends of mine. I’ve known Jennifer since I was 18 and just getting started at life, and Renes and I are close friends, I often go around to his flat and we play music, talk and tell each other the plots of stories we are writing.
Cherry Picker is out now, 2023, on River Rat Records. Order via Bandcamp.
