The latest KLOF Edition features some gems from the past, including music from Joe Zawinul‘s self-titled 1971 album, considered the first Weather Report album in all but name; POSH, the first album by Everything Play, formed by Souichiro Suzuki of World Standard and Toyoaki Mishima, sound programmer for Cornelius, in 1987. The liner notes of my 1997 Japanese reissue included some love from Van Dyke Parks – “…my children are dancing to the heartbeat of Souichiro Suzuki. There’s also music from the third Codona album from 1983 featuring Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos and Collin Walcott who died not long after this album was recorded in 1984; and the bootleg edition of Damon & Naomi‘s In the Morning –
This “bootleg edition” was rediscovered amid tapes salvaged from the studio of Galaxie 500 producer Kramer. It is Damon & Naomi’s 1995 debut for Sub Pop as Kramer originally conceived it – different mixes, sequence, and with the otherwise unreleased “Round and Round”.
As usual, there are plenty of tracks taken from new releases, including Emma Tricca‘s Aspirin Sun, her first for indie frontrunners Bella Union (reviewed here); the recently reviewed Spirit album by The Circling Sun whose spiritual jazz takes inspiration from Mulato Mustatke, Alice Coltrane, Yusef Latif and Pharoah Saunders (read more here); from ME LOST ME‘s forthcoming RPG album which drops in July, from which we also premiered the video for Festive Day here; Opal Eskar‘s EP, the latest collaborative project from the prolifically diverse DIY icon Karl Blau which has just been released; the b-side of Alabaster DePlume‘s latest single Salty Road Dogs Victory Anthem featuring Rozi Plain, Momoko Gill, Conrad Singh, Hannah Miller (Moulettes) and Paddy Steer; and there’s a track from Jeffrey Silverstein‘s second full-length release for Arrowhawk Records: Western Sky Music. Based in Portland, Silverstein channels the natural beauty of his adopted Pacific Northwest into guitar-driven explorations of inner landscapes. He is joined by Barry Walker Jr. on steel (North Americans + Rose City Band), Dana Buoy (Akron/Family) on drums, as well as guest appearances from William Tyler and Karima Walker; and koleżanka (Kristina Moore) – a name I strongly suggest you look up – https://linktr.ee/kolezanka -Alone with the Sound the Mind Makes is out now on Bar/None Records…”In 2016, she adopted the koleżanka name, which roughly translates to colleague, or a friendly acquaintance, a tongue-in-cheek comment on the competitive and male-dominated music scene she was navigating, and a nod to the bond she felt with the other women coming up against these same obstacles.”
