Kacey Johansing has announced her new album, Year Away, to be released on released July 28th via Night Bloom Records. The announcement is accompanied by a video for Daffodils, a song about mortality. The video was filmed by Tim Ramsey, who also co-directed it with Johansing. It features time-lapse footage, by Neil Bromhall, that ties-in strongly with the theme and song title.
About Daffodils: In March 2020, after learning that a dear friend’s life was coming to an end, Johansing sat down and, in one sitting, wrote the song “Daffodils”. An elegiac tribute to someone facing death with grace and curiosity, the lyrics confront Johansing’s own mortality by observing the brief lifespan of a flower. Only a week later, when the world came to an abrupt standstill, she soon found herself processing this recent loss while trying to make sense of a new global reality. Across the ensuing months, Johansing found herself increasingly untethered by a world of isolation and political upheaval.
Throughout Year Away, Johansing traverses uncharted emotional landscapes brought upon by the changes occurring all around her. There are moments of strong self-reflection across the album, including themes touching on loss of community, and environmental destruction. Despite this, Year Away is ultimately interested in moving forward.
