For his latest video, Scott Matthews leans on nostalgia for ‘My Selfless Moon’, where memories are relived through VHS. The video, featuring Georgia Neath and Rebecca McGory, was directed, shot and edited by Damien Hyde. It includes clips from a short film by Henri Chomette, who was responsible for coining the term Cinéma Pur (French for Pure Cinema). It focussed on the pure elements of film – form, motion, visual composition, and rhythm. Shot in black and white, Hyde seems to play with aspects of Cinéma Pur in his creation of beautiful dreamlike moments that accentuate the song’s focus on fragility. Some of the shots, such as the close-up of her eye in which you can see the reflection of the TV, demonstrate Hyde’s high attention to detail; it’s quite remarkable.
My Selfless Moon is the first single to be taken from Matthews’ forthcoming album, ‘Restless Lullabies’, in which he boldly reincarnates the songs of its electronic predecessor, ‘New Skin’, with an acoustic soundscape, long coveted by fans, that comes as close as you’ll likely get to Matthews’ unique live shows (he is on tour throughout 2023 – see link below).
On the new single, Matthews explains, “Dealing with a tone of fragility, I wrote the chorus line, ‘I bend, I bow more weak than strong. Carefully the fragile break, tender from the night, I’m her fear; I’m miles from moonlit sky, guiding her blind’. It takes strength and resilience to carry the burden of belief and hope when sometimes you can’t see it for yourself but somehow the strength you need can come from those that don’t have any left to give.”
Matthews’ new album Restless Lullabies was mastered by Miles Showell at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, who praised it; thus, “It is not over emphasising things when I say that Scott’s forthcoming album is among the very best records I have worked on in my whole career”.
