In September last year, Ellie Gowers released her striking debut album Dwelling By The Weir – an album that weaves the past, present, and future together; it is an exploration of the folklore, stories, and people that have made her home county of Warwickshire what it is today.
We have the pleasure of sharing a live acoustic video for one of the many standout tracks from ‘Dwelling By The Weir’ below. Waking up to Stone, which will be released as a single tomorrow (21 April), ahead of Earth Day, was filmed with Émilie (of Transluceo and Once More With Feeling) at The Weaver’s House; a peaceful, historic gem in the centre of Coventry’s bustling city centre.
Ellie tells us:
Waking up to Stone was born out of lockdown, where in 2020, HS2 commenced their work in the verdant Warwickshire landscape as soon as communities were locked inside of their homes. On her daily walks down paths she’d trodden her whole life, Ellie found it hard to ignore the devastation quickly unfolding. Trees, birds, colour; all disappearing, to be replaced by piles of mud, stone, and figures dressed in orange high-viz.
Now being released almost three years after it was written, the landscape still stays ridden by the turmoil the project has brought with it and doesn’t show much sign of returning to its original leafy state. Waking up to Stone follows a child being brought up in the world, watching their environment change around them as they grow. A stark reminder that we need to protect our planet for generations to come.
