Sara Wolff‘s hushed vocals and wry lyrics encourage you to lean in, rewarding you with her tack-sharp wordsmithery.
Her latest single, ‘Homesick‘, also our Song of the Day, is taken from her forthcoming EP ‘Magic Hour‘ (26th May, Small Matter Records). For a song with just three short verses, Homesick is rich and revealing in a personal narrative that explores unconventional love by one who likes to explore and is not afraid to play in the shadows.
tell me, did you change your hair?
thought I saw you over there, there’s
something different in your eyes,
tell me who you think about now
Sara Wolff, a Liverpool-based avant-garde artist, has emerged from what she describes as “a year of sound” and an overdue trip back to her childhood home of Bergen, Norway, having moved to Liverpool in 2016 to pursue her dreams and study music. Such journeys can provide a heightened perception of change within ourselves, and elements of this appear on Don’t Feed the Birds, Wolff’s lead single, inspired by the complex journey from childhood to womanhood which opens to a sensual-rich memory of “Berries and apples, down by the shrubs, picnics and blankets, red wine in cups. Cakes in boxes, frosting on top, thermos with coffee and sweets from the shop.”
“You meet yourself in the past whenever you go home, it’s like a mirror to where you once were and who you used to be,” she says. “It can be so strange to see how everything changes and how nothing has changed at the same time.”
There is an underlying attractive quaintness that lends her music a bedroom pop feel, albeit an inquisitive off-kilter one filled with literary appeal thanks to her narrative-rich lyrics. She’s a seeker…even on her website, she beckons you: ‘Tell me about your childhood talisman – an item, a place, a sound (anything!) that awakens a childhood memory for you.’
Based on how she tags herself on Bandcamp, I’m looking forward to more of her Alt-folk/knit pop. UK Tour dates are below.
