It’s been a while since we’ve written about the music of Ivan Moult. Previously we’ve mentioned influences from the 1970s self-reflective work of Nick Drake & John Martyn to the lovelorn tragedy of troubadours such as Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley. For his latest new single, Out of Time, Paul and Linda McCartney’s Ram seems to have struck a chord, an album that some consider the first indie pop album. That said, Moult has given this song a dreamy, soulful groove that is very much his own, and while the New York Philharmonic may not feature as they did on Ram, this is equally exquisite.
Moult says of Out of Time:
“Lyrically it’s a song reflecting on the nature of life and finding meaning in making the most of things and living in the moment. Sonically the song started off after I’d been listening to Paul McCartney’s ‘Ram’ album and it was quite driving whilst also relaxed but in production it ended up more reverb washed and dreamy.”
The song is taken from his third album, ‘Songs From Severn Grove’, out this Spring on the independent Welsh record label, Bubblewrap Collective. The album finds him drawing on influences such as J.J. Cale, Nina Simone, and Tim Buckley, creating a fusion of 1960s/70s folk and blues with a contemporary sound, while his unique and original style remains recognisably present throughout the album.
