Today, Venezuelan folk artist Ane Diaz has shared her newest single + video, “Carmela.” It’s the latest track off her debut album Despechada, out June 9 via Rain Phoenix’s label, LaunchLeft. The album reflects Díaz’s homesickness for her homeland as she takes listeners on a lyrically nostalgic journey through her heritage as she reimagines Venezuelan folk songs that have been chosen by her mother. Her family roots also extend to the album’s cover art, which features a painting by her brother Miguel of their cousin Vanessa.
The album title translates as “heartbroken or without your soul”, explains Díaz. “As time has passed, my memory of my country is fading. It’s almost like a loved one you’ve lost. I don’t want to forget their face or forget how they felt. So it’s this fear of losing my country that made me record this album.”
Diaz’s vocals shimmer with energy and longing throughout this powerful single, which features a gorgeous horn solo, after which the song shifts into a vibrant carnivalesque last half. That colourful vibrancy is captured in the accompanying video, which was Directed by Nathalia Pizarro and created using AI Stable Diffusion.
Aiding in the production, mixing and mastering of Despechada are Jim White, Paul Fonfara and John Keane. “I approached Jim White because his music is exactly what I wanted for these songs,” Díaz said. White is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter, visual artist and author.
“He understands sounds that are non-traditional. He knows how to create sounds with tin cans and forks … it’s a super organic feeling. I wanted him to help create an environment that wasn’t anywhere else, something altogether unique in regard to these traditional folk songs, and I think he masterfully delivered. ”
