Last month, Cinder Well (aka Amelia Baker) shared her lead single ‘Two Heads, Grey Mare’, taken from her forthcoming new album ‘Cadence’; out on April 21, 2023, on Free Dirt Records (pre-order here). Today, she releases her new single, “A Scorched Lament”, which features a brand-new and haunting music video from Cinder Well shot by Irish videographer Ruth Clinton of the band Landless.
Bird calls are widely tied into folklore, Owls were often regarded as birds of death, and the mournful cries of flocks of birds (possibly curlews, plovers or whimbrels) were called the Seven Whistlers. In Shropshire and Worcestershire, there were said to be six whistles in search of a seventh, and when that seventh was found, the world would end.
A Scorched Lament is a meditation on the impending massive changes of our times from the voice of a blackbird, a commonly featured messenger character in traditional folklore.
It is also our Song of the Day. You can also hear the song on our Regular Folk Playlist.
On this new album, Baker expands Cinder Well’s sound to include percussion as well as trance electric guitar and expansive string parts courtesy of Cormac MacDiarmada of Lankum. Also featured is her old high school friend Phillip Rogers (Haley Heynderickx) on drums and who also collaborated on arrangements. There are also contributions from bassist Neal Heppleston (Jim Ghedi) and violist Jake Falby.
