It’s always a pleasure to share the music of Samana, the creation of Rebecca Rose Harris and Franklin Mockett. Their project is more than music; it also encompasses poetry, fine art and photography. It was their appreciation of the latter, specifically, the polaroid work of photographer Mike Brodie, that inspired their last single ‘Two Wrongs’, an ode to escaping and breaking free from the mundane.
As mentioned before, their journey has been an unconventional one, and they have spent the last few years building a studio by hand in remote Wales…their new EP Dharma is the first fruit of that labour.
Both artistically and creatively rich, the songs on Dharma delve into the very essence of who they are. “These songs are an ode to our lifestyle.” Franklin explains, “from our relocation to the middle of nowhere to the nature we surround ourselves in and the solitary way of life it brings,”
On their new track ‘Seven Years’ the soft expansion of its instrumentation provides the EP’s most contained moment. Representative of a metaphysical dawn, it searches for forgotten memories, drifting between – or perhaps suspended within – both piercing light and enveloping dark. Rebecca explains;
“‘Seven Years’ evokes the liminal exchange between oneself and the embers that burn within an entrancing fire, fusing fragmented memories and abstract visions, as they emerge, collide and transform into a dream-like sequence. The allegorical tapestry of ‘Seven Years’ is woven with motifs, representative of the physical and metaphysical periods of growth and change, offering us a passage into an artistic exploration of the ancient notion of the seven year cycle; of life itself and that of renewal.”
Seven Years is an instantly engaging yet delicate song, crafted with care and delivered with sincerity. All perfectly reflected in the accompanying video, which was shot across the breadth of Wales, on super 8 film.
Seven Years is also our Song of the Day.
