Mother Sky are a collective of musicians heralding from South Wales, Manchester and London. The band assembled remotely during the pandemic in 2021 to record a collection of obscure folk covers. They have since reunited as friends foremost and creative collaborators to write and record original music; their sound has been described as alt-folk ranging to post-rock.
Individually, the collective have contributed to live scores, compositions and recordings by some of the music industry’s finest – Jon Hopkins, Philip Selway, and Emilíana Torrini, to name a few. Bass player Jon Thorne is a founder member of the folk group Yorkston/Thorne/Khan; drummer Luke Flowers (a long-standing member of the prolific jazz ensemble The Cinematic Orchestra) contributes magic to recordings and live shows.
Mother Sky have self-released two singles, both critically acclaimed, receiving plays on BBC RADIO 6 on Huw Stephens’ BBC RADIO WALES and Cerys Mathews’ popular Sunday show. Their next single, The Land beneath, is released tomorrow (24th March) and features guest vocals from the powerful singer/songwriter and frontwoman of The Duke Spirit, Liela Moss. An EP is scheduled for late spring 2023.
Innovative and boldly progressive, The Land Beneath is a protest song, a response to the powers that govern us, to those who place greed above the welfare of people and the land beneath our feet. It’s a beautifully balanced offering – a tumultuous gothic wall of sound bolstered by guitar and drums…punctuated by the mesmerising vocals of Liela Moss and Thorne’s bass and beautiful fiddle lines…like someone rolled The Velvet Underground, Kate Bush and the Dirty Three into one. Gritty and transcendent, it’s totally mesmerising.
Mother Sky are confirming festival shows for the summer and are releasing their debut album in September.
